Grinning Cat by Susumu Yokota

Although eleven years have passed since it’s release Grinning Cat has lost nothing, through the tracks atmospheres and spaces are built up, consisting of broken piano, chimes, bells, voices, layered with etheral synth and samples from the classical. The more spatial pieces are finely juxtaposed with those with beats, the whole album floats over seamlessly. In their description of the album Leaf mention that it brings to mind the world of Murakami Haruki’s The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. In it’s inspired fusion of differring genres the album has become a classic in it’s own right.
